Pantanal: Into the Swamp with Michelle Harris

On travelblog.org Michelle Harris writes about her trip into the Pantanal in early May 2005. She had signed up for a 3 day tour at the airport in Campo Grande. Now, perhaps the airport isn’t the best place from where the book a tour. Read Michelle’s account for yourself. Overall, she seems to have liked it but there were a number of issues she raised that I would find unsatisfactory:

  • the tour group consisted mostly of guys in their early 20s who were mostly interested in “sex, women, drugs, partying, hair removal cream and moisturiser ” and an girl from the US with “an irritatingly high girly voice”. Doesn’t quite sound like a nature experience.
  • At the base camp tour groups sit around waiting for the final group to arrive before being served dinner.
  • What are the nights like? “I attempted to join the youth around the camp fire drinking beers all night, but caved early. This trip is making me feel old as I just can’t be bothered to sit around listening to the crap they were talking about! Let’s just say that not many people on this tour seem to be here for the wildlife. And the guides seemed to be worse than anyone.”
