“Paraguay, the Fourth Power”

So says the Buenos Aires daily Clarin.

Ok, so they’re talking about soybeans. Why do I have this continuing obsession with soybeans? I really don’t understand it.

Latitudes Magazine

One of the most innovative travel sites to emerge on the net recently is Latitudes Magazine. This Italian site is an online magazine produced in Flash that mimics the feel of a real (i.e., print) magazine. It’s beautifully designed and features incredible photographs, though little specific travel information. In its four issues published so far there’s only one article about South America, which oddly enough is on Paraguay. (See issue #3). Yet, it the most attractive article I’ve ever seen on Paraguay.

While a broadband connection is needed to view the online magazine, let’s hope that Latitudes Mag publishes more articles for its readers on South America, a land which offers enormous potential for photo essays.

Soybean Fever in Paraguay

Following up on a previus post about the threat of soybeans to the Brazilian Pantanal, the BBC has an article about the same topic on neighboring Paraguay: Soybean Fever Transforms Paraguay.

In Paraguay many small farmers have been displaced by the large-scale production of soybean plantations. Soybeans now account for 50% of Paraguay’s exports.
