Rio de Janeiro, from the airport to the hotel

You can always take a taxi but another option if you want to save money is to take the shuttle bus offered by Empresa Real. It’s parked by the curb just outside the entrance of the airport. The buses are air conditioned and will take up to an hour, depending upon where you are staying. The buses go by the beaches first and then head into the city. The cost is R$5 and the buses leave the airport every half hour from 5:20am till 11pm.

Fernando de Noronha

There always seems to be yet another undiscovered paradise in Brazil. Can we just spend the rest of our lives traveling around that beautiful country?

Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago just over 200 miles from the coast of Natal.

Check out this live video feed from Fernando de Noronha.

And for something really fascinating, listen to this 18 minute podcast interview with a resident of Fernando de Noronha. This type of stuff is great!

There is also a very good flickr group devoted to Fernando de Noronha. Some really informative stuff in the notes to those images.

Finally, if you’re into nature, which you should be if you’re thinking about going to Fernando de Noronha, then ecology.info has an up-to-date guide to the Birds, Mammals and Reptiles of Fernando de Noronha

Alcântara, a hidden paradise

Alcântara is a paradise far up on the northeastern coast of Brazil. Once ranked among the richest towns in northern Brazil, Alcântara is now only a village among the ruins the bay from São Luis.

The only way to get to Alcântara is by boat, 90 minutes on choppy waters but visitors report that the trip is worthwhile.

While busloads of tourists seem to find their way everywhere, Alcântara is still one of the hidden spots to be treasured.
