Araucaria Trees

The most distinctive tree in South America is undoubtedly those of the Auracaria family. These trees are sacred to the Mapuche Indians. In the northern Patagonian Andes the trees are called Pehuenia trees. In southern Brazil, the trees are called Paraña pines. An informative botanical discussion of the tree is at http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph27.htm

British settlers to the area also called it the Monkey Puzzle Tree.
